7 stress-busting tips for busy mums

Are you a mum? Do you feel run ragged and pulled in a million and one directions? Do you feel as though you are constantly failing?

Well, let me tell you… I think you’re doing a fantastic job.

I’m not a mother (sadly) but have plenty of friends and colleagues who are. And, quite frankly, they’re ‘Wonder Women’ in my eyes.

One of these is a fellow freelance journalist and mum-of-three Natalie Brown, who is married to hubby Rob and lives in Brighton, West Sussex.

This incredible lady is the brains behind the brilliant parenting blog Confessions of a Crummy Mummy. As well being a dab hand at working from home without childcare (she has Bluebell, 7, Maximilian, 4, and Marigold, 1,) Natalie writes no less than four – yes four – blog posts a week. I’m in awe!

And the great thing is she tells it like it is.

You’ll find hundreds of helpful and brutally honest posts on her blog. These range from why society is so afraid to tell the truth about parenting, to ten things she scared of now that she’s a mum. You’ll even find her views on why she won’t contribute to the teacher’s Christmas gift collection.

DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS

Especially at the school gates. Alpha mum might be fully make-upped with hair that looks like she just stepped out of a salon at 8.45am while you just about managed to pull on a pair of leggings, but so what? Do you remember what your mum wore to drop you off at school? The main thing is you got them there – fed, dressed and on time (ish) – which is a mum win whether you’re wearing leggings or Louboutin.

APPRECIATE THE LITTLE THINGS

Like the smell of the baby who won’t be put down and the den the older one is building in the room you’re trying to tidy up. It can be easy to become overwhelmed with how busy you are but life won’t always be like this, and when it isn’t you’ll miss it.

STOP SAYING YES

If you’re a yes person try and learn to say no. Don’t agree to things you haven’t got time for, like baking three batches of cupcakes for the school fair, if it means adding yet another thing to your never-ending to-do list. Or if you must say yes, buy the cupcakes from the supermarket.

OUTSOURCE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE

Cleaning, washing, the aforementioned cupcakes for the school fair. If you can afford it, there’s no shame in having paid help if it gets things done. More hands make light work.

MAKE TIME FOR ME-TIME

And I don’t mean locking yourself in the toilet for 10 minutes so you can sit on the loo and look at your phone while they beat on the door. I mean quality time away from the kids, like going to a yoga class or having a facial. You deserve it!

REMEMBER YOU CAN DO ANYTHING BUT NOT EVERYTHING

If you feel like you’re doing too many things and none of them well, then you probably are. Prioritise what’s important and shelve the rest until a time when life is a little less hectic.

GET AS MUCH SLEEP AS YOU CAN

Easier said than done, of course, but sleep deprivation can literally make you feel crazy. Try going to bed a little earlier, lingering a little longer in bed at the weekend and negotiating a lie-in when you can. Because pretty much everything feels better after a good night’s sleep.
